MEDITATION NEAR-BY WAR. «Ihr , die ihr eintretet in die Hölle der Bilder, lasset Hoffnung fahren!» Abel Gance in «Krieg und Frieden» von Paul Virillo (1986).
Synopsis:
In the film THE EXCEPTION AND THE RULE by Gabrielle Baur we submerge in an endless row of succeeding tunnels and get removed of our feeling of real time and space. Inspired by the Brecht drama "The exception and the rule" the film visualizes, varies and dramatizes themes of a murderous race through the desert, in the radically reduced form of a journey through tunnels.
THE EXCEPTION AND THE RULE by Baur is a step towards an abstract way of film narration. Few metaphers are used, the image flow is concentrated to a minimum. The dramaturgic structure as well as the cineastic language are reduced to some basic elements.
The dramaturgy is reflected in subtle changes of the image aesthetic. To obtain distinct grades of picture resolution the film was shot in different formats - from various video formats to 16mm - and processed with different digital- and transfertechnics.
